If I stopped using my WhatsApp in 2019 and I have to update the whatsapp on the same device, will there be possibility of losing the previous data?

Device is the same, whatsapp asks for update

Possibility but doubtful. I'm not sure how whatsapp works though. Does it delete old messages after a certain time?
