Why does SW care if I'm using private mode on my phone to check in. Just another way SW is less fun than EP

I don't understand the function of the home page selection where you can choose everyone, groups and friends, friends or relevant. Is this working? If I choose relevant why do I see so much stuff that has nothing to do with my groups? Some sort of default listing?
