Ad block only gets rid of the ads but does not give you any of the other privileges. You may not be interested in those, but that's not true for everyone, so it's not a full alternative. Also ad blocker doesn't support the development of the site. And the VIP badge can be turned off, so you can't even see how many VIP members there are.
