Sending a Photo of Myself to a Complete Stranger Online - Not Happening!

I just joined 'Similar Worlds' literally a few minutes ago, and I've already received a request from someone (I don't know the person, he's a complete stranger) for a photo. Er... excuse me? Do I know you? Are we friends? No.
Why do people do this?

There has to be a pay off,so there is some success at doing this or people would stop.
But I do agree it's rude.
