How do message requests work?

I remember getting a message as a request if it was from somebody I wasnt friends with or following.

Now i’m not getting message requests. I just get messages whether its from friends OR strangers Weird

I have no idea. I have a general messages place, then messages that go to another file that I didn’t set up, and occasionally message requests. I’ve never understood it.
