How do message requests work?

I remember getting a message as a request if it was from somebody I wasnt friends with or following.

Now i’m not getting message requests. I just get messages whether its from friends OR strangers Weird

I just looked in there because usually I never even glance at them at all. I do not know how they work . Majority of messages are trash and the OK few....must think I am so impolite 😳
