why is facebook charging you to use it now, when it used to promise ' facebook will always be free'

just noticed something else which has put a dampener on my online enjoyment and my elderly mother and other loved ones noticed this recently as well; on facebook when you log in now it gives you a pop up message giving you choices on whether to use facebook free ' with ads' or pay a fee monthly to use facebook ' ad free'?

i've not logged in for a long while but i'm really annoyed by these changes, and feel like facebook have gone back on their word? why promise facebook users something, when you are not gonna uphold that promise in the long run?

i have just 160 facebook contacts or friends, don't interact with too many, they're mainly all extended family and a handful of old school friends and one lady friend who i want to keep in touch with, so facebook, in a way is still pretty important to me, so i feel really angry at all these changes that i'm seeing on websites i have used for years.

any thoughts?

Did they ever promise to be ad-free?
