Best tall tale from a previous site I was on came from a woman who cultivated some seemingly sincere, close online relationships over the course of several years. People sharing personal information including email addresses.
Nothing seemed suspicious so the circle of friends was devastated when she shared that she had a serious illness. Our entire online community subsequently witnessed some heart wrenching discussions over the next few months and were, along with her friends, quite shook when she subsequently did end up passing away.
Fast forward a month or two, members of the friend group received an email from someone claiming to be her attorney informing them that she, very well off financially, had left them money in her will. And that a gathering was to take place to go over the specifics. They were given a date, time and meeting location. While some were leery and others didn’t know what to believe, several did go ahead and made travel arrangements.
Well, to make a long story short, it was subsequently uncovered (I don’t know how) that the entire thing was a hoax, the woman, her stories, her illness, her death, her will and the attorney. All turned out to be pure fiction.
One member of the friend group was actually at the airport heading for the meeting when she found out. And nobody could ever figure out the motivation behind it.
