Battle at Imjin (1951) [I Am An Ep Veteran]

This week it's 70 years ago when a small Belgian batallion of volunteers held up a massive Chinese attack across the Imjin River in Korea. The Chinese were determined to cross the two bridges near their forward positioning upon an exposed hill on the Chinese side. The road from the bridges were leading straight to Seoul. Despite been assaulted by an entire Chinese Army for two nights the whole battalion retired in correct order and had only twelve men killed.

"The Belgian battalion with the Luxembourg detachment of the UN Forces in Korea is mentioned for exceptional execution of its missions and for its remarkable heroism in its actions against the enemy on the Imjin, near Hantangang, Korea during the period from 20 till 26 April 1951. The Belgian battalion with the Luxembourg detachment, one of the smallest units of the UNO in Korea, has inflicted thirty-fold losses on the enemy compared to its own, due to its aggressive and courageous actions against the Communist Chinese. During this period considerable enemy forces, supported by fire by machine guns, mortars and artillery, repeatedly and heavily attacked the positions held by the battalion but, Belgians and Luxembourgers have continuously and bravely repulsed these fanatic attacks by inflicting heavy losses to the enemy forces... The extraordinary courage shown by the members of this units during this period has bestowed extraordinary honor on their country and on themselves. By order of US General Van Fleet, commanding genereal UN forces in Korea"

I didn’t know about the Belgian involvement until now. I should have done. In the UK Imjin River is remembered principally for the heroism of the Gloucestershire Regiment, which won the greatest number of awards for gallantry in a single engagement in the history of the British Army. The regiment became known as the Glorious Glosters, but sadly no longer exists - merged into something else. And the battle took place a month after I was born.

Cool. The Filipino force did an incredible job during the northern campaign as well -- when the Chinese attacked en masse.
