It is sad and it shocked me when I read it. My guess is EP will/is undergoing an investigation, hence the reason they are "pausing" the site and not just shutting it down entirely. If they (EP) are found not liable for what occurred, my guess is the site will return, but with some serious and strict changes to the privacy policy.
You're absolutely right though, it could happen anywhere. Facebook has been through it, Craigslist, Twitter... they've all seen scandals like this or similar to. It doesn't matter where you go. You could even meet somebody in the lobby of a Starbucks and then they turn and do something like this. Does that mean Starbucks is responsible? Not at all, but I do understand the circumstances and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her loved ones. Hopefully that ba**ard gets what's coming to him!
