I Appreciate the Experience Project Experience
I tried to save EP. This was an excerpt of what I tried.
http://www.change.org/p/ep-keep-ep-open-don-t-close-ep
It was with despair and disbelief that all EP users got a message saying that EP was going to close.
As a community we can't let this happen. Like it was said in the notice EP has helped millions of people and even saved many of them. People will actually die if EP closes.
Every problem has a solution so as a community we all want to know what "important things have changed since 2006 that risk both our ideals and our ability to deliver on them." because we are sure that things can change for the better. All those issues can be addressed and solved. EP has millions of users and we are sure that among all of us a solution can be found to keep EP open.
UPDATE: EP Link
We, the entire community have about 20 days to change things and avoid it from closing. The EP team made their decision and we as a community must stand unite and fight against the closing by any means necessary. If we do nothing then it will close for sure. If we do something about it it might not close. When it closes and you are sad remember if you did or did not do something about it.
There's still some time left so we better put our hands into work and find out solutions.
So far we made a petition. In a couple hours it got 300 signatures. we know it's not much but it's a start.
https://www.change.org/p/ep-keep-ep-open-don-t-close-ep
Some of the sign messages are just heartbreaking.
What we know so far? That EP is closing due to "important things have changed since 2006 that risk both our ideals and our ability to deliver on them" we as a community have the right to know what those changes were. Changes are changes and they can change again and for the better.
It's financial? we will find the money. Is it technical? we can solve it too. Is it anything else? Doesn't matter. Every problem has a solution. EP has millions of members with great knowledge and resources and I'm 100% sure that we can come up with solutions for the EP team.
We must do something. Please help.
Got tokens left? They will be worthless after closing. Help to spread the message by featuring questions.
EP team excuses. EVERY PROBLEM HAS A SOLUTION WITHIN THE EP COMUNITY
UPDATE 2:
In case you didn't read everything there's a part a link in the notice that says "please continue reading here" that provides some explanation from EP team.
"We created EP to provide a safe, private place online to share the experiences that mattered most, and to deliver it fairly and reliably to every user, however and wherever they were comfortable. Doing good for the world was not a side effect, it was the goal.
Over the last decade, while social media has evolved from Blogger to Snapchat, and become increasingly focused on pictures, short text, and individual popularity, EP remained focused on anonymous, long-form text stories from everyday people who were recognized for their experiences above all else. From day one, privacy of our users has been paramount , and we have never allowed names, phone numbers, or addresses. This approach bucked every trend, and challenged our ability to build an advertising-ba<x>sed business, but we passionately believe it provided the foundation for some of the most meaningful relationships imaginable. And you are proof that we were right! But there is no denying that the way people expect to use social media today is markedly different than it once was, and as the primary use has moved from web to mobile, our hallmark attributes like long-form stories are not aligned.
But, there are deeper, and more troubling trends than formats. Online anonymity, a core part of EP, is being challenged like never before. Governments and their agencies are aggressively attacking the foundations of internet privacy with a deluge of information requests, subpoenas, and warrants. We, of course, always support proper law enforcement efforts, but the well-documented potential for even abuse, even if unintentional, is enormous, and growing.
At the same time, scores of new laws require compliance with intricate, sometimes contradictory, data privacy regulations for each country, territory, and even state. For example, today there are nearly 30 different agencies that can decide whether sending data, for example, a private message from your inbox, between Europe and the US is "proper."
Finally, the sophistication of "bad apples," as few as they thankfully are, has increased dramatically. They are better able to cover their tracks and evade user bans by using mobile and encryption networks, and they use information to exploit the trust of others through social engineering. These advances, of course, relate to the first point about increasing government information gathering, in an ever escalating game of cat and mouse.
None of these are insurmountable problems, but they require immense resources to address reliably, effectively, and safely at scale. Those are outside the reach of all but a tiny handful of massive companies like Facebook and Google.
So it is with these themes in mind that we have come to the conclusion that it is better to freeze what we have today, instead of letting it erode, and affect our ability to deliver value, safety, and to respect our users' trust and expectations."
We must stand unite and fight against these things. Everything has a solution. It just sounds like a lame excuse.
First excuse they find to close EP is: "This approach bucked every trend, and challenged our ability to build an advertising-based business, but we passionately believe it provided the foundation for some of the most meaningful relationships imaginable." Money basically. EP needs money to maintain itself. We as a community have no problem whatsoever donating to keep it open. Even crowd-funding campaigns can be established. Just say how much you need for 1 year and I'm sure we will donate enough to keep it open for centuries. EP members have all kinds of financial situations and some might not be able to donate much but some are rich and can donate a lot. Plus there's tons of others solutions for revenue. In millions of users we are certainly sure that this is not a problem. So first problem is solved.
Second problem they say it's because of keeping privacy:
"Governments and their agencies are aggressively attacking the foundations of internet privacy with a deluge of information requests, subpoenas, and warrants. We, of course, always support proper law enforcement efforts, but the well-documented potential for even abuse, even if unintentional, is enormous, and growing."
That's very easily solved. Servers and/or data can be relocated to countries that respect human rights and privacy and that forbid law enforcement to violate privacy of internet users. This is a non issue. It CAN be fixed.
Third and last problem they find:
"Finally, the sophistication of "bad apples," as few as they thankfully are, has increased dramatically. They are better able to cover their tracks and evade user bans by using mobile and encryption networks, and they use information to exploit the trust of others through social engineering"
This is just a lame excuse. EP throughout times has been attacked by bots and "bad apples" and that has done very little disruption to EP itself. It sounds like another excuse. What if the first two are solved, would you want it to close? But even this issue can be solved. There's tons of ways to control "bad apples" and again with millions of users, some of them highly competent coders and security analysis I'm sure that solutions can be found to prevent and minimize bad apples. Again this is not an issue and can be easily solved.
So for all this we urge the EP team to reconsider and to respect it's members. We the community disagree whatsoever with the closing and will fight against it by any means necessary.
If you has a team don't want to continue then just hand over the keys to the community. Someone will do all the work and keep EP open faithful to all the values. If you don't want to give it away we will buy it. We have technological and financial support to do so.
Please share.
UPDATE 3:
More than 1000 active EP users signed the petition. Many more would sign if they knew about it. Comments are heart-breaking. We feel cheated, manipulated, used. kanjoya is using EP to promote their business and is ending EP.
They give excuses, we give solutions.
"Please know that we have looked into every option when making our decision to close the site. This was a very difficult decision on our part that we struggled with for months. The bottom line is that the privacy of our users is our top priority, and as online anonymity is being challenged more and more by government agencies, we simply no longer have the resources to effectively handle a slew of incoming information requests, subpoenas, and search warrants.
While we support proper law enforcement efforts, the potential for abuse is constantly growing as scores of new laws require compliance with intricate and sometimes contradictory privacy regulations for each country, territory, and state."
We are not stupid. This appears to be inevitable. It appears to be a problem. But it's not. We on EP have members that are lawyers, judges, government officials IT experts etc and we know for sure that this is just an excuse. Servers can be located anywhere in the world and there's many countries that respect human rights and privacy and the change can be done effortlessly and even saving operational costs.
Kid you not. This is just a lame excuse. This is all about money. EP doesn't make much money. Just read all about kanjoya. We are being used and we do NOT accept this. We will challenge we will fight until our demands are met.
Armen Berjikly the founder can be remembered as a hero or has a villain. We wonder what example will this set for his family.
Some people will actually die if EP ends. They will have nothing. All the support they had will be gone. There will be blood on the hands of EP
This is not a warning this is not a threat. If we don't hear back from EP again until April 8 GMT+0 with an acceptable answer we will act.
We will stand against it. We will boycott kanjoya and let their investors and costumers know what kind of practices they are doing. We will make sure that kankoya will never make any business again.
Speak your hearts and let the world and EP know what you think about EP close. Throughout the years we supported each other in the most complicated situations. It's the time we unite and stand against EP closing.
Contact everyone you can. Comment everywhere.
