Are internet chat rooms still a thing??

Remember when you could chat in chat rooms, and have chats over the microphone ?

Chat rooms with many people became confusing to keep up with. Emails and messaging aren't really all that different if two people are on at the same time and stick with the conversation. Just how I see it.
