Do you think asking a war veteran to share some of their stories could come off as rude?,

I have always wanted to meet a veteran willing to share their stories, to me it's very interesting to hear about what they went through. However I'm usually a bit hesitant to ask them to do that as I don't know if they'll rather keep those memories to themselves. What do you think?

Most of those I know don’t really like discussing it. My father, who’s generally pretty cheerful just says, "it was awful but necessary" and changes the subject.
