@Longpatrol Imo they should've gone with something like the GDPR here or the DSA, rather than a case-specific solution that will just get dodged by starting a new company, but I guess the dinosaurs in congress have a hard time conceiving a framework like that. Although heck they could've copied us for once, if they lacked the imagination.

@Elessar

TikTok is also banned in China.
Bytedance isn’t owned by the Chinese government I heard
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Moon3624 It's absolutely owned by the Chinese government (https://www.reuters.com/technology/bytedance-says-china-unit-holds-local-licences-response-media-report-2021-08-16/).

It doesn't exist in China because its reason of existence is influencing western audiences, not because it's "banned" (by the very government that runs it, no less)

Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
Because it is an arm of the Chinese Communist Party.
Should have banned TikTok long ago.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Thinkerbell Should've been banned when Russia Today was banned too. Both served pretty much the same purpose.
Viper · M
Because supposedly tik tok was used to illegally track and stalk users that were of political interest to China, such as members of the media of the international press, or media that was writing stories on China as they attempted to gain Intel on whom they are and whom they're meeting, and where they're meeting.

They used the app to tap into the cells phone gps system, so they could track them.

@Moon3624 I think you seriously misunderstood what I just posted, because I wasn't talking about you.

You did ask a genuine question, and I gave a genuine answer, it was the person with a blank account that responded to me and attempted to dismiss my genuine answer that I was making fun of... not you.
Moon3624 · 18-21, F
@Viper I apologize then I must of have misunderstood you
Viper · M
@Moon3624 There is an account, that has no profile picture and nothing on their profile picture that attempted to dismiss my post.

I've seen a lot of those blank profiles defending foreign countries, and they seem like bots to me.
Tobasco · 31-35, F
Because they want to control it
Tminus6453 · M
@Tobasco ^This^
It's about who has control over user data. Definitely don't want the CCP having it...not that the technocrats and Congress are much better.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@BizSuitStacy

Kleptocrats. 🙄
@Thinkerbell big time
TexChik · F
They are actively data mining for the CCP. Trump had them banned before but creepy joe reversed that.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Fvck Tiktok anf fvck our politicians too and fvck the CCP

Because American companies see TikTok as competition, and they can use anti-china sentiment to get it banned.
Moon3624 · 18-21, F
@Elessar I know it’s not about human rights

But some members who want to ban TikTok use these terms
“Tik tok pushes China sentiment “
“TikTok pushes anti Zionism or anti Israel sentiment “

They don’t actually just say “we want to protect our security “
Do u get me ?

But most importantly did USA gov find evidence of bytedance selling American info to China ?
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Moon3624 Nothing of that has anything to do with this thing, really, people just love to speak and make wild associations.

TikTok can be used by the Chinese government to target western with ad-hoc mediatic campaigns with the purpose of swaying large swaths of the population to vote a certain way that is convenient to their regime. It's a no brainer that something like that will get either heavily regulated or outright banned. It's also the reason why China itself preemptively banned FB, Insta, Whatsapp, Telegram and pretty much everything else you use on their soil.

The US gave China the option to sell the platform and not get banned, but they're refusing. If it'll get banned, blame China. Last but not least, if you start a corporation in Saudi Arabia, in Europe or in the US and target American audiences, you'll have to be compliant with American law or get shut down. I don't see why Chinese software should be an exception.
Viper · M
@Moon3624
But I thought TikTok isn’t Chinese anyways ? Isn’t the ceo Singaporean ?
The CEO is Singaporean, but the CEO isn't the owner.

ByteDance owns TikTok and they're a Chinese company, and China's law states that if the government needs them to do something, they have to do it.
