Social media addiction

a bombshell leak by an employee-turned-whistleblower from Facebook alleging knowledge of the potential for addiction in young people from using their platforms

Emerging social media addiction lawsuits claim that companies like Meta, the owner of popular social media sites Facebook and Instagram, purposefully implemented algorithms and other specific features designed to addict users to their platforms, despite their knowledge of the potential negative effects of addiction.

Many lawyers are even taking legal actions against the various platforms for addiction specifically in younger people

@iamonfire696 everyone will get a check for $0.24 of the settlement after the lawyers take their cuts.

@SooperSarah BAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA we will be able to buy a jolly rancher from the jiffy store

I guess this is old news. There have been studies going back at least a decade that show the same thing. It is the same with the video game industry and loot boxes.
@DeluxedEdition The kids get the same high as gamblers get when making bets. Pretty sinister stuff.

@Ozymandiaz Definitely to gaming but what do you mean loot boxes?

I personally used to be a gamer and i can literally compare the addiction to drugs. I would play runescape for dayssss

Yeah I hate Facebook for many reasons but all that ever happens in these situations is they'll stick a warning label on in future just to cover their a$$es. Like say online gambling companies started doing ''please gamble responsibly'' ''set yourself a sensible amount'', like no sh!t Sherlock.

It's like ''please drink responsibly'' labels on cans of beer it doesn't exactly stop anyone drinking 12 cans of it on a Friday night and getting blind drunk, but it does stop the companies making it from getting sued every five minutes, lolz.

And yes I know I missed the point about younger people generally being more susceptible to getting addicted to online media I totally agree but facebook come on that's what their grandmas use lolz! They're more likely to be addicted to online gaming, minecraft, shooting the sh!te outta each other on first person shooters or a whole host of other modern toss us oldies have never even heard of than they are stuffy FB, but yeah sure no matter what way you look at this one it's all very very addictive stuff.

Does anybody really care or is this all about money and lawsuits? 🤑
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@FloorGenAdm I just think it's interesting that it's being publicly a Acknowledged to this extent

They say eating disorders are at an all time high because supposedly thats the content being shown because of the algorithm

@TheEmperor you wouldn't be the first. One even sued her mom's doctor for "wrongful conception"
And won

Who is going to be awarded the damages?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@iamonfire696 I havent heard of anything being settled or people being awarded money

I just thought it was interesting

I know americans get a bad wrap for suing for everything but i like it because to a certain extent these companies are held liable
