The Superbowl is a great reminder that the NFL is a business and the competitors are really the sponsors who invest millions in developing and presenting commercials. And with a televised half-time performance apparently intended to lure younger views to tune in to watch the commercials, and who would likely otherwise be doing something else than watching :)
The extended half-time performances depart from the traditional talking-heads routines to present big shows that have nothing to do with the game itself beyond extend the traditional "rest and adjust" time between the two halves.
