I agree with you. The media build supporters to expect glorious victory every time. Southgate has done well.

Oh it's always the same old argument.

Premier League clubs buy endless foreign players because it's a sales avenue in the countries they're from.
A chance to sell replica shirts at inflated prices; encourage advertisers for sponsorship deals etc.
Bring more money into a club by association.

Following this model British clubs don't develop homegrown talent.
Many reasons/excuses for that. Chief among them nobody abroad wants to buy British players (unless they're clearly exceptional) often because foreign fanbases often find something to dislike, even if it's not logical.

This is the same energy as "we've won the Euro, we'll certainly score well in the upcoming world cup" immediately prior losing to North Macedonia and failing to qualify lol

Bcos currently The England squad can best be said to be their "golden generation" .....

They have good players , even those on the bench
The likes of Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo....

Yet they are just grinding the results....they haven't lived up to expectations and the coach is struggling with his selection.....

I WONT BE SURPRISED IF SWITZERLAND KNOCKS ENGLAND OUT OF THE EURO 2024 TOURNAMENT......though
He's been relatively successful, as in, relative to other England managers since 1966. He hasn't won anything but he's come closer and more often than most. The criticism tends to be that he is too negative rather than that he is a disaster. He was a defender though, as a player, so that probably explains why.

I've long been a Southgate defender and think he was unfairly criticised in previous tournaments. I mean - yeah - compare his record to previous England managers.

You can even make the case that he is the most successful England manager ever because Ald Ramsey did nothing of note outside of the world cup win.

This tournament, the team has been worse. With such a talented squad, we have scraped into the quarter finals despite a ridiculously easy draw.

The team is dysfunctional and playing so far below its potential that Switzerland will beat us if we don't improve
Renkon · 41-45, M
Let Switzerland answer that question today.😀

First because he lost both. Second because he is cautious, negative and takes far too long to make up his mind. Third because he has appalling dress sense.
