World Cup thoughts - USA

I was talking with friends yesterday about the World Cup and how i had the unpopular opinion of wanting USA to do really well in this tournament - it was an if not England, who? Question. My reasoning for this is for a number of reasons:
Poch - i will always love the guy and want him to have success (even when he was at Chelsea)
Whilst i hate Trump and his supporters, i do recognise that so does half of the states, and they deserve something good in their lives.
And lastly if usa win, the support and funding the sport would get would be huge and as a lover of the game i can see how this benefits everyone.

This has been, so far, a great tournament. I wasn't keen on the 48 teams but have loved seeing some of the matches and the upsets this caused....never would have had that Arg v Cape Verde fame.

This whole debacle about Balogun though and Trump intervening is not sportmanship, and has now made me think i want the Belgians to win. Honestly the best result would be is for Balogun to be benched or him refuse to play....because if USA win now with him playing they will just be labelled as cheats.

Now....i don't think i have the energy to stay up and watch tonight so i just hope that football wins ❤⚽

American here. I was about to post on this topic. I am angry beyond words about the president calling FIGA on this and about FIFA suspending the red card. It’s the opposite of fair play and typifies the whole “these rules don’t apply to me” attitude of this president and his whole party. I love Poch—you and I go way back on this. If he were actually to bench Balogun I would admire him more than any other sports figure. But it won’t happen, and absent that I’ll be rooting for Belgium tonight. And probably not even watching, out of embarrassment and disgust.

@Harmonium1923 Well, this part isn't nescessary:

probably not even watching, out of embarrassment and disgust.

It's really not the teams fault.
I'm still not sure what happened yesterday, because the US just didn't put up the performance that most people (including myself) were hoping for. Were the US underperformed on expectations, Belgium overperformed considering their last games. Thielemans was just incredible on the midfield yesterday.

@Kwek00 Fair enough. And I did watch the game. Belgium was far better.
BabyLonia · F
@Kwek00 but i understood the frustration @Harmonium1923 was conveying

Justice was served tonight but also, Belgium was really impressive and clearly the better team. Well done to them.

When the team fails then the fans need to be there for them. And not calling them pussies.

Have to feel a little sympathy for Pochetino.
Good coach. Immense experience. Criticised and belittled by Trump prior to the tournament and of course his nonsense during American involvement in it.
Have to admit there's a bit of me hoping he ends up back at Tottenham if we ever manage to oust the contemptible and equally corruptible vipers nest running things there.

~30% of Americans like Trump and ~70% of Americans are not doing enough to stop him. We ALL deserve to suffer for it.

IDC about FIFA, just my thoughts.
BabyLonia · F
@BlueVeins we need to start to heal and move forward. Trump is goddawful but i really hope that the future is better

@BlueVeins

The first thing to know about FIFA is that it is massively corrupt. The second thing is that its massively corrupt. The third thing is that it kisses Trump's ass.
I just about support England lmao, the US would be pushing it

Idc who people support tho. People get weirdly aggressive with all of this
BabyLonia · F
@HijabaDabbaDoo hopefully the world cup unifies more than separates
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
@Burnley123 I have blocked (or am blocked by) the person who started the response so I can’t add to the thread, but I totally agree with your comments on FIFA and corruption.

@Darksideinthenight2 as it stands though it was a sending off by the rules...the fact Messi wasn't booked is separate

My feeling is that this world cup will not be remembered favourably.
Yes , some of the games are good but the whole thing has been over commercialized and too much politics have been involved.
BabyLonia · F
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters i still hope football will prevail over the politics, maybe i am being a bit naive.

The last two were worse with Qatar and Russia but it is the football that has stayed with us

Balogun

Typical behaviour from an ex-Gooner, right?
BabyLonia · F
@Burnley123 lol....very typical!
Elessar · 31-35, M
I think that ship has sailed guys

((not) obviously sarcasm)
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Elessar Not that obvious. 😄
JSul3 · 70-79
@Elessar Is this real or fake?

If real, then the saga continues. Everything Trump touches turns to excrement or dies.
He attended the only game that that the NY Knicks lost. He then interfered with the US Soccer Team, and they lost.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@JSul3 If real the Trump has only demeaned himself even further by writing it. He's already dragged his own reputation down by interfering with match officials' decisions, and FIFA's by their succumbing to him. Though this is the same committee that awarded Mr. Trump a pretend "Peace Prize" well before the matches started, so perhaps their cowardice was not all that surprising.

Whethe the referee was right or not I have no idea, but it is not for even the President of any host country to try to rule on the games' conduct.

I fear this may have set a precedent bad for international sports generally.

If that quoted post supposedly by Trump is not by him - is a hoax - then clearly by a childish coward unable either to criticise anyone or anything constructively and civilly, or to be satirical.
