The Better Craftsperson #4. John Charlton
Meeting "Jack" Charlton in person at his hometown of Ashington's own Tesco Supermarket was one of thé highlights of my quite ordinary life. I found the "longfellow" at the back looking through some beer bottles to buy. His height was so very imposing that I didn't dare to ask him for any pointers nor even to say how much I enjoyed his managing Ireland's national football team.
John "Jack" Charlton had been an English professional footballer and manager who played as a centre-back for Leeds. He was part of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup and managed the Republic of Ireland national team from 1986 to 1996, taking them to two World Cups and one European Championship.
He was granted at the end of this career honorary Irish citizenship. This prestigious award was bestowed upon him in 1996, recognizing his significant contributions to Irish football and the positive impact he had on the nation's reputation abroad
