Hard Life Being A Sheffield Wednesday Supporter

We were aiming to see our first game of the season, what with the Owls playing at Plymouth and us living down this neck of the woods. But, obviously, the recent sad death of our Monach, Queen Elizabeth II, has had all sport's fixtures postponed until a couple of weeks, so sadly we won't be able to see the boys.

Made me think; League 1, in 4th. Just a few short years ago we were vying for the top spot in the Championship which would mean into the Premier League...

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

But, like this great nation always has, so too with Sheffield Wednesday get there...

I remember when United were promoted from the first division 5/6 years ago and all the Wednesday fans were giving it large about how it was a different division now and United wouldn't be able to compete... luckily we got a good manager and got stuck in and the rest is history. Will Wednesday get back? Maybe but those teams who don't have somebody to bankroll them are going to need one hell of an academy.

@GeniUs There's always been a (?healthy) rivalry between the Blades (Y'see, I refuse to call them 'The Blunts'!) and the Owls over the years and, yep, I was one that thought - and still do think - that getting into the Prem is not as tough as staying in the Prem, as we can see by the HUGE spending spree and players from Nottingham Forest (which they needed and I feel they'll come good by the end of the season..). Fair play to you guys, you managed it well.

I think we'd have probably come back down unfortunately....

But hopefully we'll be back in the Championship this coming season..

@SammyJo Luckily staying in the Championship isn't as hard as getting into it but there is a gulf between the top 5/6 teams who have had recent PL money and the others. West Brom have a terrible manager and Middlesbrough a good one I expect them to complete the top 6 by the end of the season (Utd, Norwich, Burnley, Watford). As for the first as well as Wednesday there are 4 other big sides (5 if you include Barnsley) so it's never a done deal to get promotion.

@GeniUs Yes indeed. Spending life, well a couple of decades, in Derbyshire I was aware of just how Forest and the Rams had fared throughout the years - Forest scrapping to get into the Championship (not helped by their owner at the time..) - through friends and colleagues.

I always think the more Yorkshire clubs up in the higher echelons of football the better. It's not all about the North or the South....

I think matches should of been played with a 2 minute silence not just for the clubs but for supporters travelling, a silence would have been a good show of respect and perhaps a last sing of god save the queen
SammyJo · 51-55, F
@Barny52 Maybe. I'm on the fence with this one. I'm going along with the Fam's wishes and protocol. Whatever makes them happy (although that's the wrong word..) at this sad time..

@SammyJo yes im in two minds about it, a mate of mine traveled up from South Wales for Sheffield u and Rotherham match must be many more like him and you! Rugby playing swung it more towards playing and having a 2 mins silence
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@SammyJo I think (not sure) it was the football associations' call to postpone games, a bad one IMO. Rugby got it right.

Empires rise and fall in English football. Always have and always will.

I've seen Burnley play in four divisions. We've won two league titles and we were once a game away from being relegates to non league.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@Burnley123 I've seen Sheff U play in all 4 divisions, though must admit it was fun going to a match expected a 4-0 win every week when we were in the fourth and not so much fun in the Prem expecting the same to happen to us.

@SammyJo we love Antonio, great personality and on his day, a nightmare for defenders..⚒️
SammyJo · 51-55, F
@SW-User Yes, which is why we should have kept him! Lol! I love his enthusiasm...
SW-User
proper team with proper fans too
SammyJo · 51-55, F
@SW-User Oh aren't we just! Top 10 in the Prem a good few number of times. Automatically Promoted to the Championship in 2011/12, that was our last good time, really. 2016 we got 4th and then......

😔

Let's not talk about the last few years. But...it'll come good..

@SW-User Most teams are proper with proper fans though, the less successful a team the more loyal the fans are IMO.
