What were the influences why you started smoking and how old were you?

If you started young as an child or young teen or as an adult, I would be interested in why - i can't put that all in a survey 😅 - feel free to write to me or leave a comment here ;)

Mum smoked, and I thought that she was the coolest person in the world. Can't remember. 12 I think.

I started when I was 16. Although my father smoked, the curiosity was still more about why I started. And I became a much stronger smoker than my father

I was 10, around that age. Because of my Aunt.

Was first / initially interested in smoking / wanted to smoke when I was 5 or 6. At the time I didn't realize that someone that age could smoke, and ended up not starting until 13 when one of my friends started.

Rights of passage

Everyone smoked back when, from principals at school to police in public places, everyone.
@eyeno yea. Right - in "the good old times" how we would say in germany 😅

I can't really explain it. My parents both quit smoking when my mom got pregnant with me and have been non-smokers ever since. I was still interested, even as a child. And then from the typical "secret puffing" as boys do as a boy in childhood to occasional smokers / party smokers to regular smokers
@Lars2se so a typical development/procedure of a boy from non-smokers ? 😅

@mommyoflittle yes, right ;)

I don't smoke, but my wife started in college when all of her friends and dates smoked. She would never smoke around me or let me know that she smoked. She stopped after we had been married a while.
@exexec I'm glad for you both; the end results can be horrific.

@SomeMichGuy Lynn's father died at 49, attributed to smoking. Her mother died in her 70s after suffering from chronic pulmonary disease from smoking. Her brother died at 70, partly as a result of smoking. She was smart enough to quit, although she never actually smoked a lot.
@exexec Good!

I started, like many, out of curiosity
sandman31 · 22-25, M
Started at 16 by smoking alongside some friends. When i started living alone after going to college, became a regular smoker. The fact that it relaxes me SO MUCH made me go further into it. But the costs involved really fuck me up
@sandman31 OOh yea. crazy costs... but nice that it relaxes you so much - good ;)

Everybody in my family smoked and I idolised my mother so I wanted to do everything she did
railfan1984 · 36-40, M
A lot was curiosity but it was more because my Mom smoked and being around her all the time. It looked like something fun to do and she always seemed happy when she was smoking. She let me start smoking at 15 and I chose the same brand she smoked Marlboro Lights.

I was encouraged by my Aunty to let her help me start to smoke when i was just 7. She explained to me how much smoking would calm me and help me cope with my insecurities. Even though it was 1977, and smoking was quite accepted, i had not known a chilk like me could be a proper smoker. Aunty was ever so kind and in just a couple of weeks i had my very own smoking habit and my own brand of menthol cigarettes. I soon found out how much i loved being a young smoker and have carried my addiction with me now for 46 years at a heavy level. I love my fags.

A friend talked me into it but quickly smoked just by myself to help with being nervous sometimes back then..
