Do you or don't you?

My mother started smoking at fourteen and still smokes now at seventy three, my dad gave up rolling his own cigarettes at fifty and he's seventy five. So is it genetics? If my dad had continued to smoke would he still be here? Who knows? I never smoked because it never appealed to me, but my husband smokes cigars and even though I hate this habit, it smells better.

I think it is genetic, at least wrt cancer. My father was the 12th of 13 children (no TV then, haha) - all 13 of them were smokers all their lives, and none of them died of cancer - although 5 of them including Dad, died of COPD, but all made it to at least 80

@firefall it is the interaction between nature and nurture, genetics and the environment.
