My opinion

I feel like people often assume that drug addicts are bad people who only steal or hurt others, but the truth is that most of them just want to recover and live happy lives. Ironically, many start using drugs because they’re chasing that happiness—they think it will make them feel better, maybe even forever. But the reality hits hard.

A lot of teenagers especially romanticize the “drug life”—the vibe, the feeling of floating, the thrill of running around at night. But that illusion quickly fades, and what’s left is usually homelessness, pain, and feeling like absolute garbage.

What really frustrates me is how judgmental parents can be. They talk about addicts like it's impossible that their own kids could ever end up in that situation. They say things like, “They wanted this,” or “They chose to ruin their life.” But that’s just not true most of the time. Addiction isn’t a choice—it’s something that happens when people are trying to cope with pain or trauma, and they end up trapped.

I can’t see addicts as bad people. I see them as people who are suffering—miserable and in urgent need of help. But instead of helping them, society isolates and abandons them. That’s especially heartbreaking when it’s teenagers. They don’t need judgment. They need support and compassion.

Substance abusers seem to be unable to stop until they hit rock bottom.
