I see you're from UK. Smoking has all but been banned entirely in public places in Canada, which means smoking is not permitted in any government building or even outside on government property. Smoking is also banned in all restaurants AND bars, pubs, dance clubs AND even outdoor cafes.
Smoking is also banned in a taxi cabs, on all city busses, within all bus shelters at bus stops and all subways (the tube) including the tube station itself anywhere in Canada.
The best news is, smoking is BANNED in all private personal vehicles if a child under 18 years of age is present in the car.
For me to read your post about being in the presence of cigarette smoke has become so extremely foreign to me that I've actually forgotten what it was like to be around those who actually buy cigarettes. I can't believe that of all the things that people protest against in the USA and UK, that cigarette smoking in public places is still tolerated in those two countries.

@swirlie I think it's tolerated because of tax..

@Mellowgirl
I think it's tolerated in UK because there are too many people addicted to nicotine who think that smoking is 'normal' or is at least their 'right'.
