cigarettes are way too expensive these days; I switched to vape about 12-13 years ago (for what a carton of smokes cost, I can get enough vape liquid to last 6-7 months). It's definitely healthier
It's been my experience that the people who quit completely/go cold turkey either A, didn't smoke long to begin with; B, don't have as much stress to deal with; or C, just find some other bad habit to pick up (like eating more, or drinking all these crazy energy drinks, etc.)

I hated the idea so much that I never ever smoked in my life.
I am glad you quit

I smoked as a kid. Quit cause my husband said I tasted like an ashtray. I know how rude!!
Then started again vaping a number of years ago quit with Gods help and never think of it ever.

@Lostpoet not really. Today is automated. You go to the tobacco shop and buy a bag of this stuff that says pipe tobacco, which is a bunch of bullshit it's just a label to avoid the taxes and other things. Pipe tobacco is not considered cigarette tobacco. You're used to pipe tobacco, having sweet aromas. This tobacco doesn't have any of that. And you buy a machine. Then you buy a box of tubes. The machine stuffs the tubes for you. I can make a whole pack in five minutes. They have hand crank and hand operated machines, but screw that. For $79 you can buy an electric machine. It's paid for the first time you do your first three cartons.

@Lostpoet Why would I put nicotine back into my body, after getting rid of it for one and a half month?!
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Nightwings that's the spirit. Keep it up. 👍

I smoked for 15 years and quit 45 years ago. Never gave it another thought after the first 4 days or so.

Don't ever feel the need to explain what you post about please.
I feel for you. I have never smoked, but my sister is trying to quit since this April I think. She went from a pack a day to 5 cigarettes per day.
It was horrible as she says, but it got better at managing her urges.
Because nicotine mimics somehow acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter I think, for memory concentration and other stuff, the brain lowers its natural production levels and it takes time once you quit to basically retrain it to generate more of it.
For her, this has been the most difficult period. And I saw her irritable, crying, yelling, screaming in a pillow, all that sorts. She couldn't be talked to. But, it passed. Her determination is strong enough that she went through it and now she's at 5 per day.
She hopes soon to stop completely, but the science says this period might last.
I hope you don't mind I shared her story, bc I don't have a personal one, but it's very close to me, as we live together and I saw her changes and what she said.
My point is, there is hope and science behind it and it's been 7/8 months and she's doing fine. Oh and I forgot to mention, she was on nicotine gum for a while there after the initial restrictment of 5 per day. But now it's just the cigarettes.
And you're at the most hard part. 🫂

I smoked cigarettes for well over 50 years. About 6 years ago I managed to quit "cold turkey" and have been completely successful, but every time I smell a cigarette I still subconsciously want to ask that person for one!! Fortunately I have not succumbed to my addiction!!
It took me about a year to form new soothing habits.
I'll be honest. Been 18 years and urge sometimes still pops up. Thankfully it's over quickly

Yeah, I don't know. You went cold turkey or not. I eased off. It took me that two year mark to completely quit smoking. But I was actually smoking just one cigarette a day the last year. I was making my own. On Christmas Day, I ran out of tobacco and tubes. And I said, screw it. I'm not buying anymore. And that was it.

I quit in 2020 but started up again when I drank liquor. I quit both cigarettes and alcohol almost 2 years and 4 months ago. Haven't had the urge to smoke again.

I honestly don't think about them. But every now and then this twinge of craving pops in my head and I immediately turn it off because I don't know where it came from and I'm not going to allow it to win.
