Will UK cigarette ban work?

What do you think of the UK govt's new anti-cigarette strategy. Will it work as intended and will there be unintended consequences?

I need a nap. Seriously. I read that as the UK cigarette was going to ban work.

(What or who is this UK cigarette and why does it want to ban work?)

Will it work as intended:

probably, sort of.

will there be unintended consequences?
Of course.

And intended but unmentioned ones too no doubt.
Ontheroad · M
@ninalanyon Exactly, but overall, for the long-term, this is good stuff.

Will it work as intended? No.

Will it have unintended consequences? Assuredly.

While I love the idea, unfortunately, I have my doubt that this ban will ever be fully implemented. Like most things that the legislator has implemented, they have been been bypassed by those that the laws were made to protect.

Problem is if you allow this to go ahead the next 'cause' is going to be what ?
Alcohol ?.... causes of more social problems statistically.

Petrol ?.... how many folk have breathing issues because of the environment they live in ?

Chocolate ?. . .You get constant media-ache on how obesity is causing/going to cost the country in the future.....

Where do you want it to stop ?

@Picklebobble2 The post is about cigarettes; not alcohol, petrol, chocolate or any other potential 'cause' you choose to suggest. Those are not being banned, and are irrrelevant to the specific question about the sale of cigarettes.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Really point remains the same
Really · 80-89, M
@Picklebobble2 Regarding cigarettes, which is what the thread is about, there was no 'point' whatsoever to your response.
It'll be funny I guess in 40 years when the 50 something year old goes in to buy cigarettes and they're told "Sorry..you're underage"
eventtemple123 · 22-25, M
Well, look at how the "ban" of other drugs is working...
Really · 80-89, M
@SW-User
@eventtemple123 heroin, cocaine, crystal meth etc were never legal.
I think that was the point (sarcastic)
SW-User
@Really nope. They were never legal

@SW-User Good grief.

Nobody believed a smoking ban in French (!) bars and restaurants would work – but it did!

@Really

I'd wear a maple leaf for similar reasons

That reminds me of being in Cornwall in the 1990s when lots of buildings near St Ives were sporting the Canadian flag!

@ArtieKat Ah yes, 'Captain Canada!" (Brian Tobin). Who can still remember his "speeches rife with rhetoric and youthful exuberance"? (Quoting Wikipedia)

I think it will. There may be some grumbling among the right-wing tabloids, but it will soon die down. Of course, people will still get hold of cigarettes illegally, but smoking levels will plummet over the years and decades to come :)

@SW-User
I think it wil
Will what? Will work, or have unintended consequences, or both?

Smoking levels have already been plummeting for decades; sensible people taking responsibility for their own actions, in response to ever-growing scientific, medical and statistical information. Cynical hint: You won't get much of that on "social media" 😄

Will never happen in the US as tobacco is part of native american culture.
Really · 80-89, M
@Tastyfrzz It's about the SALE of cigartettes - Oh wait, that HAS become part of native American culture?
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Really they used tobacco long before anyone else.
Really · 80-89, M
@Tastyfrzz Well whoopy-doo that was just brilliant of 'them'. Some of my early ancestors left Africa before ANY body!
