There were breaks in between 18 and 56 - mostly (like the final quit) when I had a bad cold/cough when I couldn't smoke. That was always the time to quit. But that particular date would've been my mother's 100th birthday so I was determined to make it stick.
My dad quit when he was 57... after a lifetime of smoking. He smoked makins (hand-rolled, filterless) all his life. Got tired of hacking and spitting into the wood stove every morning.
