Are they being banned?
SW-User
@cherokeepatti Will you tell us already, lol
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User Because they want to do away with the cash register lane where a cashier has to be present to check IDs for age to verify it’s a legal sale. That way they can go to all self-checks in those stores, some of them anyway… Walmart’s corporate decision is to have customers do the work of scanning their own purchases with a few supervisors watching so they can greedily pocket more profits. If they try to make me scan my own products I’ma gonna say “I don’t get paid to work here, but YOU do “

A number of years ago I was talking to a guy who was the manager of all the local warehouses for the Safeway stored in the region. He said that the one warehouse he could not use racking in was the cigarette warehouse. The product came and went so fast he could not put it away on a shelf. A pallet would arrive and within an hour it would be gone again. He said no other product moved so fast.

Too much theft? I have no idea. Walmart doesn't sell tobacco here so impossible for me to guess.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti OK makes sense. Tobacco retailers here have to keep them behind doors so they are never seen. You have to order them and the clerk opens the locked case and gives you a pack. I don't smoke so I am going on observation not on experience.

@hippyjoe1955 they have to keep them locked up and the customer has to show an ID for age if they they have graying hair or wrinkling in the face. It’s not just about loss due to shoplifting but federal law providing tobacco to underage customers. The manager would be arrested if anyone was caught selling alcohol or tobacco to underage. That kind of amused me in training because the manager was such a dick that everyone would tell things about how he was running the store.

@hippyjoe1955 nope, they want more self-checks, they have to have a cashier check IDs to verify age before they can sell tobacco products. Can’t do that on a self-check.

They can't compete with the Indian Reservations.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@eli1601 they want even more self-checks and are doing away with them in those states to meet that goal, maybe all self-checks in the stores
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@cherokeepatti The Walmart we used to go to remodeled and now they have only two checkouts with a cashier and about thirty self checkouts so I think it will eventually be everywhere. Even Costco has some self checkouts now.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@eli1601 I think they remodel each store every 7 or so years. They did the one I quit a year or so later and have remodeled it once again since then. I quite in 2012. And this last time they remodeled they put in two large self-check areas on each end of the cash register area up front. I think they have 3 20 items or less registers that mostly run during the rush times, and one cash register that they sell cigarettes and tobacco from. And a cashier in electronics and another in lawn & garden but it’s iffy sometimes with those two.
To save expenses
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Souls To make room for more self-checks, you can’t self-check cigarettes
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti they did this over a year ago. It has nothing to do with self checkouts
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Jeffrey53 yes it does in those states. Cigarettes are still a profitable sale item and it brings smokers into their stores who will probably pick up a few other items while they are there.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
Good for walmart. Cigarettes are bad for a person health
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@smileylovesgaming their decision is not based on health at all. They could care less, they can sell more meds when people are in bad health.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
Ive never bought smokes there. I didnt even know that they sold them there

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
