I hear things while I am trying to sleep. It's usually the cat.
ANYONE with a master key can walk in here any time. That includes ALL maintenance staff. That makes me nervous...but I can't block the door in case of a medical emergency.
Instead, I push the trash can in front of the door. It will make a lot of noise if someone tries to get in.

@4meAndyou Oh when I lived in university apartments there were so many with keys that could have walked in. And they made sure they came into the apartments to check something every 2-3 weeks in addition to maintenance calls. Sometimes they’d get water heaters, or ceiling lights, fire alarms, drains to make sure they weren’t clogged because they tied into the next apartments drains, etc. I think they were mostly checking for things that were forbidden like pets or washer/dryers being used (had to use laundromat there but some tried to save money & use a portable washer & hang out clothes on the clothesline next to the laundromat), the a/c vents etc.
When they did come in they’d knock loudly (the doors were metal & LOUD) and yell MAINTENANCE or MANAGER, and then let themselves in. They didn’t want to see anyone that was sitting around or sleeping naked on the sofa etc.
