@DragonFruit The pharmaceutical company Bayer first used the term “heroin” as its brand name for the drug in 1898. People who took the drug remarked how they felt a heroic feeling while they were on it. Bayer marketed heroin across the country as a non-addictive pain medication. Until the 1920s, it was prescribed to adults and children as cold medicine and for other pains. You could have ordered one kilogram in 1920 without difficulties.

@helenS Yes, but that was over 100years ago....nobody's giving away a kilo of heroin now.

@DragonFruit Yes, but isn't it surprising that the substance (heroin) was used as an ordinary drug (in the pharmaceutical sense)?

@helenS I'm old enough that it doesn't seem all that strange that it was introduced as a "milder" version of opium thought to be less addictive and help to get opium/morphine addicts off their addictions to those drugs
Testing wasn't adequate enough to reveal that this "wonder drug" was just as addictive and not a solution to the problem.
The FDA has taken a lot of criticism in recent years for not approving promising appearing drugs fast enough, but it is somewhat important to test sufficiently to avoid these types of situations.
