Because it is still a male dominated society and it would imply that if the woman bought a groom she would own him.

@SageWanderer you know...my experience with men is that the majority actually want to be kept men as they have relied solely on me for housing, food, finances, etc. So it's weird to me that men would take umbrage to being considered owned.
