if a cashier is standoffish and unfriendly towards you in the supermarket

how should you respond? this just happened earlier when i went to the supermarket and was at the checkout, the woman cashier who has served me before was abrupt, unfriendly & standoffish.....i reacted by keeping cool, ignoring it, bagging up my stuff saying 'thanks, goodbye' and off i went....but her reaction bothered me and made me doubt myself.

any thoughts?

Eh, think it was more of a reflection of something amiss in her life than anything you brought to the table. I’ve encountered many cashiers who had the same vibe and kinda felt the heaviness they were trying to deal with. So, it’s doubtful that it’s you. You handled it perfectly though. I usually react the same way but I find myself bringing even more compassion and softness to the interaction in the hopes a smidge of it will infect them some way. It’s definitely not easy out there and some have a had time hiding that struggle.

Don't doubt yourself. Cashiers have to work through mental and physical illness, family strife and being poor with no benefits (usually, they schedule everyone just under full-time). Plus some of their clientele are enough to ruin a day within 10 mins of shift start. You did the right thing by being polite and moving on, so it can't be you

@seaglass thanks for your thoughts.

I've had this happen. Sometimes I'm like whatever, we all have bad days, but there are also times when I make them aware that if they can't handle the public, they should find another job & ESPECIALLY if my mother is the one they make the mistake of disrespecting....

Hey they have bad days too and dont know to many cashiers that are wealthy might of had to come in unexpectedly or maybe issues need to let it go.

Don't worry about it.

She probably had bad things going on in her life that had nothing to do with you personally.

They are just miserable for whatever reason - I don't take it personally...if anything I take it as more of a positive when I encounter someone cheerful and friendly.

I honestly refuse to use the cahiers anymore. I use Self-Check-Out exclusively.

@Iwillwait Same... I usually order and pick up, anyway

@seaglass yeah, I am more comfortable with the tactile Experience of choosing my produce and food items.

@Iwillwait Anyway you can get a happy shopping experience is a good way :)

I shop at Kroger. The employees are so unhappy and obviously used and abused. None of them are friendly. Life in America.

If you got to deal with rude people all day like she does it would get hectic, you did right, ♥
