Taking grocery clerk jobs away

I know people who won't use the self-check "because I don't work there" and "it takes away jobs from clerks because the store doesn't have to hire as many." OK, fine. But ask these same people if they bring their grocery cart back to the front of the store or a carrel after unloading everything, and their answer will be "of course, only jerks leave their carts in the parking lot."

But aren't these the same thing? The clerks are paid to ring up groceries and to collect carts. I used to work in a grocery store, and one of my jobs was to collect carts from the parking lot. Why is it both uncool to ring up your own groceries, and uncool to leave your cart in the parking lot?

No, I don't think it's the same thing. This reminds of when a former friend laughed at and 'chided' me for refusing to just leave clothes I'd tried on, in a dressing room.

At the very least, I put shopping carts in one of the places designated for them in the parking lot. Many people just leave them where it takes the least effort for them, like in blocking a parking spot, even handicapped ones. I'm guessing that is what most people mean, about jerks.

You should put your cart in a cart corral so it doesn't bang up cars. It's fine to let the store employees take them back to the store from there.
My husband always hopes to find a cart still in the corral because he likes to have one to lean on while he's walking into the store.

I use the self check bc automation is good. Less work for the same output is great, and also it creates jobs. After ATMs came out, the number of tellers increased bc banking got cheaper, meaning that more banks were opened.

If they actually had decent customer service then I wouldn't use self checkout..I find most of them rude and lazy ...
@SW-User I live in Georgia, and all of the clerks I run into are very pleasant, almost too pleasant. It's annoying to wait in line while the clerk and the person in front of you are making chit-chat. I only use the self check if I have a few items and I'm in a hurry.

there is still someone to oversee the self checkout and from what i understand those cashiers from the regular lines just get moved to other parts of the store. ok no more cashier for you now you get to work in softlines. it doesnt take away jobs because someone has to man the machines anyway and the others just get moved elsewhere

Here there are trolley storage bays all over the car parks and a company contacts for the lot to return each supermarkets trolleys back to it. (I have the luxury of three supermarkets including an Aldi, who are like lightening with their checkouts.)😷

Ever been to Aldi? They always have a cashier available and they call for backup when lines get long. Need a cart? It unlocks for a 25¢ deposit.

It cost over $1200 to repair the damage to my car when a shopping cart hit the store de of my car, scratching both the driver's door and the front panel!
I don’t do self-checkout, but I do put my cart in the areas designated for stacking carts that’s in the parking lot. So someone will still need to return them to the store itself.

I always use self checkout. It’s way faster and I can take care in bagging my items.

Especially at Walmart, they pester you into signing up for the Walmart credit card. No thanks.

The line is too long otherwise.

99% of the time I'd rather do self-checkout ... it's usually the new express lane for me, I don't have to wait on some selfish jerk yapping to the cashier for 10 minutes after they are done with their transaction before they will move their happy @ss out of the way so other people can pay for their melting ice cream
