Can i ask why you buy so many eggs at once? I buy 6 eggs a week for about £1.50 (approx $2) a week for myself as my partner doesnt eat them. The use by date here in about 10 days if you get a carton from the back of the shelf.

@meggie they will keep much longer if they are refrigerated. Up to 6 weeks. I can put an egg in a glass of water and if it sinks it’s fresh.

@meggie Only 10 days? Most the eggs here have a 3 to 5 week span.

@cherokeepatti yes the most I've seen here are about 10 days. Perhaps they put them in cold storage for a week or so before delivering to the supetmarkets. Interesting.

@meggie they are supposed to keep them cold.

@Fungirlmmm i think lots of good food here in the UK gets wasted due to use by dates. Plus with large population they want us to buy in smaller quantities
meggie · F
@cherokeepatti yes i am sure they do but deliver to supermarkets a week or more after the chickens have laid them.

@meggie And some of us live in rural areas and we may only go to the grocery store a couple times a month so we buy more at one time than what a person in the city would.

@meggie I’ve seen eggs sitting out in open-air markets at bazaars in Morocco and no refrigeration or date to sell by because they put them in open flats and stack them high.

@meggie I love Europe, especially Germany and the UK.

@Fungirlmmm yes the US is a big country and i remember now how some places have no local stores. Anyway I understand now. Thank you.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@meggie You're welcome. I live over an hour away from a grocery store. :)
meggie · F
@Fungirlmmm i hope you get to see more.

@meggie Me too. :)

@meggie Inflation is the main reason. And during the Covid quarantine eggs went up really high and some stores had no eggs for sale sometimes.
meggie · F
@cherokeepatti same here most things have gone up more than 25%
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@meggie Some have practically doubled, like 75-90%. I am on retirement now so I might as well stock up to have something on hand if it’s gets much worse. I got a pantry full now.
meggie · F
@cherokeepatti yrs wise to do so. I have stocked up a bit too
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@meggie If I had room in my freezer I would get more and freeze them. Can use them for baking or scrambled eggs

@cherokeepatti US eggs are washed and that takes off the protective layer which means they have to be refrigerated. Here in Norway I keep my eggs on the counter in the kitchen, they keep for about a month.
