I went there once when I was staying in Newcastle a few years ago just to see what the fuss was about. I think because it was the end of a beautifully sunny day (yes they happen in the NE of England) there weren't many people about and it seemed a bit lifeless. Good public transport means you don't need a car (I rarely drive on holiday) and as always there were plenty of eating places of the usual 'branded' variety.
I love Newcastle and surrounds. Highly recommend it to anyone who has never visited.
I suspect that I am not their target demographic, though.
