What was the best find in a thrift shop or flea market you went to?

Mine was a silk dress which I have worn just once going out to the theatre. Bit see through, but combated that with a full slip underneath.

This amateur (ham) radio set-up was worth more three thousand dollars if all was bought new

Power supply, radio, Morse code keyer, the Timewave frequency expander, the SWR meter, HF antenna, and a few other odds and ends

I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Rummage Sale. Old lady had the whole box marked Old Radio Gear $50 bucks for whole box

I tried to offer more money but she wouldn't take it. Her husband just bought the radio a year before he passed.

Gotten many years of use out this radio. Like almost 20 years and still going strong

Not at a thrift store.

A homeless person gave it to me cause I gave him $20 for his laundry.

A cute little stand up table.

I really asked him if he stole it.
GoddessLinaStardust · 31-35, F
@Umile You asked him to steal it for you?
Umile · 41-45, F
@GoddessLinaStardust I asked him if he stole it. Excuse me, typo, im often times too tired to write a thesis.

@Teileach Funny thing about the book section at thrift, on any given day you can find these entire series - Left Behind, Twilight, and 50 shades.

With Twilight - at one point people used to pre-order, stand in line, etc but today, thrift stores cannot even give them away.

Thrift stores are interesting - Some of the other things they have a hard time selling - like the stack of used DVD players, were once pretty expensive.

I have seen some things and thought, "Someone out there is probably still paying off the credit card they used when they bought this".

Thrift stores are almost like a history lesson about economics.
Teileach · 56-60, F
@CestManan They would certainly sell more items with lower prices, because they are given everything for free. I gave a small fridge away once, not all take electrical items but this one did, ad the woman in the shop was saying how she would 'give' it to her son moving out. I said to her I wasn't giving it to the shop for someone to have it free as the money for it was supposed to be for charity. She never got it and I took it elsewhere.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Teileach I do not know how they operate in your country, but here in the US a lot of thrift organizations claim to be for charity, but they really are not. Typical I suppose.
The biggest one here is called "Goodwill" and sometimes there is controversy surrounding them.

But yeah pricing is a different story. Some things are fairly priced for being used items. Sometimes though, they are priced close to what it would cost new. Usually small mundane stuff like tupperware or just random junk. Sometimes furniture though.

Clothes are typically $5 for any given article.

Oh about books - those go anywhere between $1 and $5, normally based on the condition. I imagine those three series are probably cheaper since there are too many unwanted used ones.

When I was a graduate student in 1985, my classmate/roommate and I went to a garage sale and furnished much of our two-bedroom apartment for $150, including an old couch, coffee table, table and chairs, file cabinet, wine rack, and some other odds and ends.
Teileach · 56-60, F
@RedBaron You can certainly get good bargains at these places.
RedBaron · M
@Teileach And 39 years later, I still have the wine rack. 🤣

2 summers ago I found several pairs of petite XS ladies dress pants some new with tags and cardigans that worked perfect for my kid's school uniform. I spent $2-5 a piece.

When they got worn I searched the brands online because she loved them and they're all like $60-70 a pop.

Super cute dress!

I love getting books and LP’s at thrift stores.

I found a thrift shop way north of where I live kind of the country. They have the absolute best women’s clothes for dirt cheap. I love going there once every couple of months.

That dress looks kind of Victorian. I found an ancient Atari gaming system with a box of games. Once I found something I could play it on, I had a lot of fun with that outdated technology
Looks vintage

I found a first edition Ian Fleming James Bond novel, gave it to my friend who’s a fan

You never know what treasures you might find unless you stop and look.
I found a great leather backpack that I reused for a pack for my bicycle, after
I cut the straps off I realized I had a $ 200 backpack that I only payed $15 for. I had ruined the backpack but it made a great pack for my bike, I’ve used it for about 15 years and it’s still good, I’m happy I got it.
