This mindset is not exclusive to christians. Humans are part of the animal kingdom therefore we, like many other species eat the meat of other animals. We prey on the weak so to say.
We organized our societies and gained the knowledge how to rear kettle, ... those animals are destined to be eaten. It's not nice but that's life. Dogs are seen as cute pets and have a different usage. Societies have different rules when it comes to eating animals.
