I Am Working On Myself

If I had to have something printed on my forehead it would probably say "under development" as it seems this is always the case. Maybe I'll be ready for action by the time we have flying cars buzzing around in the sky. Anyway, I've been working on myself for many years as I've had no choice but to stop and put my life on hold more often than not in order to nurse my afflictions. Right now I've got to the point where I'm in a position to take things further and advance some more, hopefully getting close to that elusive goal.

I've made referrals to see a couple of professionals with regards to my mental health, away from Psychiatry, and I'm also taking the time to help out with starting back up a peer support group so that I can look to help others while I'm helping myself. I find that kind of environment beneficial to all involved, as it's possible to bounce ideas and what not off of one another and build a therapeutic environment based on mutual trust and understanding. I also have a friend who's interested in joining a local gym, so I've expressed an interest in joining him with hope that we can keep each other motivated enough to keep up going, as that has been the downfall for us both with it in the past.

Half the battle is keeping optimistic that change for the better is possible and to have the courage to persevere when things seem bleak. As long as I keep trying, eventually I'll do what I need to to have a rewarding and fulfilling life.

You're correct in that it could help me with moving forward if I use these two areas for a kind of diary on here, but then I have a blog I use to keep things up-to-date that way. I had a meeting with regards to the peer support group and they're looking to take it in a different direction than what it was before when I was running it. They want to keep things a bit more light hearted and enjoyable, without exploring heavily and going deep down into people's problems seriously. They'll still be having discussions about deeper issues and people will still share what they may be having difficulty with, but we'll just be more careful with it; the focus is on keeping things upbeat and optimistic.

I won't quite know how I feel about it until it starts, but it will at least get me out of my home for the night it falls on.

As for working out, I've got someone else I'm trying to go walking with a couple of times a week too as well as seeing about starting at the gym, so hopefully this will all come into place before too long.

I don't deal with depression at the same level you do, Solitary, but I think you are on the right track with this. I agree with you about support groups being useful and actually, so is working out. I'd love to see you post more about both issues (I know there are usually confidentiality issues with support groups, so maybe those posts could be just that you went to your group and maybe some high level details or else just your own experiences). Posting out here could give you a bit of accountability to keep you moving forward!
