Why are people like this?

Have you ever known someone with a dangerous job or lifestyle and you find yourself worrying more for that person than they do themselves? While you sit holding your breath on pins and needles they seem so nonchalant as if they couldn't have just lost their life at any given moment.

My brother. A police officer for around twenty years. He wasn’t exactly nonchalant about the things he saw and experienced, but especially with our mother, he didn’t discuss the job.

Even now that he’s retired, he’ll occasionally mention something (like the fact that he never had to shoot or kill anyone, which he says is not uncommon, few do). Like most in that profession he’s seen the ugliest sides of human behavior, yet he remains a kind person.
