Why are people like this?

Have you ever known someone with a dangerous job or lifestyle and you find yourself worrying more for that person than they do themselves? While you sit holding your breath on pins and needles they seem so nonchalant as if they couldn't have just lost their life at any given moment.

They are usually experts in the field, trained to handle the risks. So what looks dangerous to you, and would be dangerous for you, is mostly routine for them . Routine that requires care and vigilance but routine nonetheless.

For a non-military example take a look at Fred Dibnah scaffolding a tall chimney and taking it down brick by brick.
