While ending the relationship, if someone grieves that they wasted their time.

How should you react?

All experiences can be learned from. I'm not sure I'd ever say gaining knowledge is a waste of time.
If it's friend or family expressing that grief, I'd ask if they are seeking advice or feedback or are they looking to vent. If the former, I'd try to compassionately help them recant what they've learned.
If it's a former partner, I'd ask myself if I need to put up a stronger distance boundary with this person, perhaps even no contact.
