Okay, this one's weird

I'm anosmic, but occasionally either randomly smell something for a brief time, or my brain hallucinates a 'smell'. I have no frame of reference for what the smell is, I can only describe it in terms of something else.

Imagine you're sitting next to your dog. You know it's your dog, you see it, you hear it breathing, feel it move. You decide to pet it. You're fully expecting to feel the soft fur, the warmth of the dog. Instead, what you feel is the cold, hard, smooth marble of a statue of your dog.

That moment where you still 'feel' what you're expecting before your brain changes it to what you actually feel.......That's what I'm currently 'smelling'

I think this ones going to give me a headache

That's very interesting. Very disturbing. I've never heard of this.

@Tumbleweed For all I know, it was actually something very normal I was smelling, assuming I was really smelling anything at all. I just don't have the word association to say "It was sandalwood" or whatever. I've had a lot of weird ones. Purple. Lucky Charms marshmallows made into gravy, squares.

They don't last long, usually. about an hour or so.

@SarahAndSamantha I'm just very intrigued! It reminds me of seeing sounds or smelling colors.. I can't remember the name of the disorder.

@Tumbleweed synesthesia. It's a lot like what I imagine that's like. Sometimes I even wonder if I have that for smells and my brain said "nope, that's too much to deal with" and just shut off my sense of smell lol.

@SarahAndSamantha That's just amazing to me. It must make ypur life difficult at times though, I imagine.

@Tumbleweed It can. I never know if my BO is ok or not lol. or let's say I were to unknowingly spill a chemical at work, I could be sitting there breathing in the fumes without knowing it.

I think the weirdest thing that came from this was one time I was playing on the computer, and I just started getting this overwhelming feeling of 'something's wrong'. At first, I just kinda ignored it, but it kept getting stronger. Just more and more wrong feeling. Eventually I got up and started looking around the house. Got into the living room and there was smoke pouring out of a trashcan. My roommate had apparently emptied an ashtray with a still burning cigarette into it and went to bed. I never smelled the smoke, at least not conciously. But still became aware of it through that 'wrongness' feeling
