Writing. My dad was a professional writer (a dramatist) and I saw how much he enjoyed his work. I know that had a lot to do with my own literary dedication.
But the main reason I wanted to write had to do with the sheer misery of growing up with an extremely abusive mother. I felt alone, and quite isolated, in my suffering. Learning to read gave me a whole new outlook and cut through my loneliness and daily fear. Basically, books saved my life (I was suicidal as a kid). I felt I owed my life to literature and wanted to pay back the debt.
