I think there are a lot of reasons.
Resources/money
Sex
Power/sense of control
Sadism/lack of empathy
Faking for self-identity
Then there's also the possibility that they do truly care for you, just not in a way we can understand or accept given how they hurt us.
There's also the hedgehog paradox. We can never avoiding hurting the ones we love. Not completely. It will always happen. The trick I think is finding people who try not to stab us with their quills when they need warmth, understanding they will fail sometimes. And avoiding the one who do it on purpose or just don't care.
End of the day, the only option is to move forward and keep searching for people who do truly care for us.
