Curious………

To those of you old timers. Do people use this site as much since AI has been developed? I am new here.

I believe there are fewer people nowadays, but Similar Worlds was always a small tightknit community. I don't believe it's become smaller due to AI, it's been more like a steady decline over many years, long before AI became anything like what it is today. This is gonna sound terrible, but the "quality of people" is what has declined the most. This was originally a "refugee camp" for people who used to use another social network called Experience Project, however Similar Worlds got a lot of things wrong about what made Experience Project good, so few people from those times hung around for very long. I honestly only know a handful of people here now who are even capable of spelling their own name, let alone have anything remotely interesting to say. I don't even try to post anything interesting myself anymore, because this website, and the large majority of its community, just isn't worth it. Just little things like showing ads in the middle of our profiles (between collections and posts) makes it feel incredibly cheap. Everyone here know each other, and if they don't know you, they'll accuse you of being someone else's alt-account. 😅

@Nightwings I'd be extremely annoyed if the site kept showing advertisements (although I appreciate why it might), like the truly dreadful MSN, but I don't see ads on here so are they something you can switch off?

I used to use EP but left it well before it closed down. I had no idea that would happen, but I left because it started to have some dark corners I do not want in my computer. I think this site is slowly deteriorating too, but also down to what is posted more than any managerial policy.

Luckily SW does still have areas and conversations well above that.

@Nightwings That's what someone else's alt-account would say 😏

@ArishMell You can turn off ads if you have VIP, but the thing is that you only turn them off for yourself, which means that ads in the middle of your personal profile still show to people who do not use Adblocker or have VIP. That kind of ruins the aesthetic of the profile, not that there's much customization in the first place.

@Nightwings Thank you. In fact I have not deliberately turned off any advertising so there may be something else in action there.

@ArishMell Could be that your browser has a built-in adblocker, or perhaps something else is blocking them. (=

@Nightwings Advertisements appear on a specialist site dedicated to one of my interests, but only from companies relevant to it; and only as marginalia off the discussion pages themselves. That could be by its own managers' policy though. It removes any trade ads found trying to sneak into the discussion fora and private-users' classified-ads pages.

I wondered if because SW is USA-based its ads are all from US companies, so you only see the ads in the USA.

@ArishMell I got Ukrainian ads a couple times, so it seems that they show ads depending on where we live.

@Nightwings Ah - that could well explain it! If I don't see ads it may simply be that they have not sold advertising space to British companies.
