It's a very old saying, far older than myself. This is how I understood it from over 50 years ago from a lampstore owner. Yeah he made his own lampshades as well. And it's quite possible he was the person to originate the saying. He was very old even then.🙃
Consider yourself a very bright lamp.
Only you have a shade of your own picking over it, so others won't get their eyes hurt. You have made the determination of the type of shade.
Yet someone walks in front of the whole light shading your light even further. They are acting to make your light less bright or a double lampshade.
You don't want that because you yourself have already have determined how bright you want to be.
The whole reason for lampshades is to diffuse light. To spread it out without hurting others eyes.
