I Am a Curious Person

Being as I'm British I feel entitled to be excused for not knowing. It's the Trump thing. Obviously this guy, for all his political inexperience, has struck a chord with just over half of American voters. He can't behave himself around attractive young women, he's a tax-dodging billionaire and the kkk support him. Yet still he is admired by a large wedge of American society, including women and non-white people, who by any standards are perfectly decent, intelligent folk.

Since I'm not American, what I see of Trump is his bad press. Since I'm open-minded I'm convinced there is a reason I shouldn't take that bad press at face value. So I wont. Trump speaks for something that's been overlooked, repressed even, and i dont know what it is. It's not fair to label all his supporters racists misogynists and homophobes because I know it's not universally true. But I'd love to find out his appeal, given the unexpected shock of his election, and some of the reported fallout resulting from it

I don't agree with everything he does or says. I don't consider him tax dodging...he used our current tax code. It's legal and any smart business owner does the same. Hell..I use the tax code to my advantage too.
He's not a politician. He runs businesses. I think that's the biggest appeal...we all know our government can't be trusted.
Not that he can be..who knows. But he's something different. And nobody else is stepping up to try and take charge.

Trump, a billionaire, is generally advantaging himself by living off American largesse. You can overlook it for some greater good if you think it's smart, etc, and that as President he will do similarly smart things for America... but legal or otherwise, it is still tax dodging. The accusations against him seem remarkably well founded - and he admits them - so I'm not interested in denial, but why people are willing to turn a blind eye. I want to know What he has going for him that is SO strong that people are willing to forgive him so much. Stepping up to take charge is big, but... is that it?
