are you asking about OUIJA boards ? I played with this a lot as a kid, it did feel like it was moving by itself but I think we want it to work so we unconsciously more the thing on the board ourselves. a bit like how people who use a pendulum for divination are unconsciously making it spin in the direction they want. but I couldn't say for sure.
