I was reading through several internet arguments under an Instagram post that said a new mother hadn't showered for three days. Some people where judging her harshly and others where saying it could be an exaggeration or she could've been doing other things besides showering.

It doesn't matter, but I am curious what most people think suffices for decent hygiene?

New mothers are not concerned about showering. They are concerned with sleep and caring for the new baby. I am positive I l didn't shower for serval days at a time being a new mother.

When my depression is bad I have a hard time showering but I am also not out rolling in dirt and filth all day long so not showering every day isn't a big deal.

Typically I shower every day because it makes me feel good not because I am dirty.

@JaggedLittlePill Yeah I would never judge a new mother for something like that, especially if I've never had a baby. Even if I had, everyone's experience is different.

Daily bath is reasonable

Personally, I shower about twice per day because I feel disgusting otherwise, but honestly that's not good or healthy. From all the scientific journalism I've read on the subject, one shower every 2-3 days is kinda the sweet spot. I selected 'shower as needed' because that's the closest.

@coffeedimplez Well, think about it. Back a hundred thousand years ago, people weren't taking baths with soap all the time. Human skin had to stay healthy and safe from infection without those modern amenities, so it developed natural defenses like skin oils & symbiotic relationships with a variety of bacteria and viruses. When you take a shower, you wipe all of that good shit off of your body and that makes you more vulnerable.

@BlueVeins I've read several articles which make the same point. Excessive hygiene destroys the skin's natural flora, it seems.

@BlueVeins @novaguy2u Very interesting

Shower every morning before the day starts... So I'm fresh and feeling clean. I finish off with ice cold water.. Great for mental health.
Then another shower in the evening to relax and unwind. Fabulous decent hygiene.

I think the term 'decent hygiene' is a bit of a nonsense really.
I mean most of us bathe or shower at least once a day.
But since this Covid rubbish came about you can never be clean enough !

In fact that message was probably true before all the current nonsense.

Endless shampoos that strip all the natural stuff in your hair but at least leaves you smelling like you've been dragged through a florists !

Loads of shower gels and foam baths that may actually do more harm to the skin than good.

New mum hasn't had a shower in 3 days ?
Why would anyone be 'shocked' ?
I doubt most new Mums can move for a few days after having their body go through that kind of trauma for several hours !
coffeedimplez · 26-30, F
@Picklebobble2 There were a lot of high and mighty people under that thread judging her. But also a lot of people who said the same thing you just said. I had no comment to make on the subject since I've never been a new mother.

i shower morning and evening, and if i exercise during the day i shower after that... so, frequently, three showers a day.

my girlfriend follows the same pattern.
JupiterDreams · 31-35
Every other day. Daily seems a little obsessive imo... I don't think it's very healthy for your skin either
It is fascinating to me how we say one thing and do another. Conserve. Save water & energy. But shower several times a day. That doesn't count.

When I was a kid, one bathroom per house was the norm and so were big families. In our case, eight people and one bathtub.

Weekly bathing was normal, with, of course, daily washing.

Now it's every other day, with, of course, daily washing.
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
@Mamapolo2016 Weekly shared bath when I was a kid too. Basin wash every day.
@novaguy2u Yep. We weren't so persnickety. 😀

It depends on your lifestyle.
Once a day is good but some need more.... or less
If youre privileged enough to have clean water and a shower & part of the civilized world you need to be in there daily.
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
@DarlingSelah Quite, but medical science suggests that we should cut back on soaps and body washes and simply rinse ourselves in the shower, apart from our "pits and bits".
@novaguy2u showering daily is not going to kill you or cause significant harm. Thats nasty people propaganda lol

Unless I’m camping somewhere in the wilderness, I bathe/shower daily
Once a day is good for me, usually, but every other day might work for some.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I reserve the right to dump a bucket of water over anyone who is smelly. amen.
Everyday or every other day.
Once a week :)
