I didn’t. We still didn’t have a TV. Among the better things that ever happened to me.

I was amazed the first time I saw it in colour.

We had one of the few color tvs in our neighborhood in 1965. So we got to see it in color. It was magical. Pop told me he took his younger brother to see it at the theater when it first came out in 1939.
Now that blew my mind. 🤯

I was 8 then,and we got our first TV set in November 1956 - TV broadcasting here in Australia had only commenced two months earlier.

But, if it’s any consolation, a neighbor told me yesterday that her parents got married in 1986, and they are by no means spring chickens.

What's worse, is that the Wizard of Oz movie was actually made in August of 1939, 12 years before you were born and it was filmed in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada... not Kansas!
The Writer of the Wizard of Oz filmed the movie in Saskatchewan Canada because he said "Saskatchewan looks more like Kansas than Kansas does".
The perception Americans have of the State of Kansas is one of wide open prairie wheat fields that are as flat as a pancake and go on for miles in all directions.
The truth is, the State of Kansas is anything BUT as flat as a pancake, nor is it a place where wheat fields stretch into the horizon and go on forever.
But that illusive place really does exist in the world and where that place is found, was Saskatchewan Canada when he searched and found it.
Now you know the rest of your story! 🇨🇦

@swirlie
All of it?
Seems that I read someplace that at least some of the movie was shot in Hollywood, the parts with the Munchkin. It was an article about how they were cheated out of their pay and treated worse than Toto.

@Heartlander
I don't recall seeing Munchkins running around in the fields of a Saskatchewan prairie farm anywhere in the movie, so I think we can safely assume that any scene that showed a castle and yellow brick road in the movie was most likely shot in Hollywood, mainly because there are no castles or yellow brick roads found anywhere in Saskatchewan, nor in Kansas for that matter. 🤦🏼♀🇨🇦

@swirlie It's been a while since I saw that story, but I think the movie gets credit for the large community of small people in and around Hollywood. The Wizard of Oz was like the magnet that drew them there because of employment opportunities, and where they remained.
Over the years there were attempts or efforts to create a Wizard of Oz theme park in Eastern Kansas at a place called the Sunflower Ordinance Plant which is about midway between Kansas City. KS and Lawrence, KS. So there was once the possibility of a Yellow Brick Road and Castles in Kansas.
Sunflower was a leftover from WW2, scaled back since the war, but once the largest such storage facility on earth. Contamination issues may have been the reasons why the Wizard of Oz Plans never progressed. But the grounds have since been decontaminated and the site is now the location of the huge Panasonic Battery plant and a data center to be.

it came out in 1939
I saw it in the 1940s at a movie theater. Not sure exactly when.
